Share Your Views – Integrated PMQ–Foundation Programme (PMQ+FP) Study

Dear Medical Student,

We are writing to share a quick reminder about the HEIW and North Wales Medical School (NWMS), Bangor University research study exploring medical student views on a potential Integrated Primary Medical Qualification (PMQ) and Foundation Programme (FP) pathway in Wales.

Thank you to those who have already taken part — we have had a very positive initial response from students across Wales. We are keen to ensure we hear from as many students as possible, across all year groups and regions.

About the study

This research aims to better understand medical students’ preferences and experiences to help inform future workforce planning in Wales.

We are particularly interested in your views on:

  • A potential integrated PMQ–Foundation Programme pathway in Wales

  • Experiences of, and confidence in, the current Foundation Programme allocation process

  • Attitudes towards early allocation of Foundation posts (including location, flexibility, and fairness)

  • Willingness to work in rural or hard‑to‑recruit areas, and what incentives might support this

What does taking part involve?

  • Completing a short online survey (approximately 10–15 minutes)

  • The survey will remain open until 25th May 2026

  • Optional opportunity to express interest in future focus groups or interviews

Participation is entirely voluntary, and all responses are anonymised.

How to take part:

  1. Read the attached Participant Information Sheet

  2. Complete the online survey here

About the proposed integrated PMQ–FP pathway

The proposed pathway would allow eligible medical students in Wales to apply in their penultimate year for selected Foundation posts within specific Health Boards and sites. Successful applicants would receive confirmation of their Foundation post and location at the start of their final year, removing the need to apply through the UK Foundation Programme allocation process.

Your views are incredibly valuable in helping shape future training pathways and supporting the long-term medical workforce in Wales.

Thank you very much for your time and input.

Kind regards,

Matt
